Left the lake this morning after a good night's sleep and drove north to Chatyn. This is a war memorial and the site of a village that was once here. German soldiers rounded up all the villagers into a barn. They set it alight and nearly everyone was killed. This site was chosen to represent the 185 villages that were destroyed in this way. It is also a memorial to the millions of Jews that died in Belarus during the war. There was a huge bronze statue at the entrance of a man carrying his injured son. At the site of each of the cottages where a family had lived was a square of concrete and a bell. The bells of the whole village would toll almost simultaneously every few minutes. A very sad chapter in world history and for Belarus.
I love travel, any type. There is always a buzz in finding & exploring a place for the first time, meeting and making new friends and if you return things are never quite the same.
